Brackish water is defined by containing higher TDS levels than potable water, but lower TDS levels than seawater (in the range of 1,000 mg/L TDS to 25,000 mg/L TDS). Brackish water can be found in coastal areas (bays and estuaries, where fresh water mixes with salt water). In aquifers (where it is usually referred to as saline water), and in surface waters (salt marshes, for instance, contain brackish water). Nowadays, desalination has become a very affordable solution to cope with fresh water shortage typically in tropical as well as of off-shore areas. Brackish water, containing minerals and salts typically less than 10,000 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS), can be economically treated with today's reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis reversal (EDR) systems. The desalination core process is based on Reverse Osmosis Membrane technology. But standing alone, it doesn't provide safe drinking water, nor does it guarantee an efficient plant.
