Chulucanas pottery is made from a clay found in the surroundingsof Chulucanas, a small village near Piura city,in northern Peru, locatedalso in the department (state) of Piura. The technique for making this unique pottery,involving only the use of the artisan's hands and feet - no machines are used -stone and wooden tools, dates back to pre-Columbian times. These techniques have their roots with theancient Vicus culture of Northern Peru andhave existed for over 2000 years. Theskills have been passed on from family member to family member for generations.once a piece is crafted byhand, the baking process is carried out in several stages. Smoke from burning wood and mango leavescreates a black colour on the piece except on the areas which have been coveredby a glaze and mud mixture. once thepieces have been fired, they are polished by rubbing them with a finestone.
