Vanilla is native to the lowland forests of Central America and parts of northern America. It was already used the Aztec before the Spanish saw and adopted it during their conquest. Witihn a comparatively short time it was introduced throughout the tropics. At present the main producing countries are Madagascar, Indonesia, Uganda, Uruguay, Jamaica amongst others. Vanilla was introduced in the Kagera region in 1997. Westlake Agro Products was established to deal with the organic vanilla products. The activities of the company are production, buying processing and export of Vanilla. In order to assure sufficient production the business initiated plantation and will also work with out growers. The production at the plantation and from its out growers is an organic principles. The 400 out growers contracted by us are not using chemical, fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. Their production can therefore be considered as organic by default and is certified and accredited by IMO.
