IV. Process
 
Methyl acrylate is produced by acid-catalysed esterification of acrylic acid, which in turn is produced by oxidation of propylene. Owing to its tendency to polymerize, samples typically contain an inhibitor such as hydroquinone.
The compound undergoes transesterification to give a variety of other acrylate easters. The transesterification is facilitated because methanol and methyl acrylate form a low boiling azeotrope (b.p. 62-63). Several other esters are precursors to useful polymers.
 
 
V. Applications
 
Methyl acrylate is used in the following applications:
1. Coatings – for textiles and adhesives, and for surface and water-based coatings, and coatings used for paints, leather finishing and paper.
2. Paints- for paints formulations, acrylic polymers have good water resistance, low temperature flexibility and excellent weathering and sunlight resistance.
3. Adhesives – for use in construction and pressure-sensitive adhesives.
4. Fiber sizing- as the precursor to fibers that are woven to make carpets.
5. Leather – to produce different finishes, particularly nubuck and suede.
6. Textiles – in the manufacture of both woven and non-woven textiles.
7. Chemical intermediates – for a variety of chemical products. It is used in the preparation of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers typically by Michael addition with a primary amine.
8. Pharmaceutical intermediates- as a reagent in the synthesis of various pharmaceutical intermediates.
9. Others- in the production of elastomers, thickeners, superabsorbents and other industries.
