Hex bolt, also known as hex cap bolt or machine bolt, is a form of threaded fastener with an external male thread and a six-sided head. With halfway extended threads, the shaft performs better as a dowel for pinning the joint against sideways shear force compared with those of tap bolts.
Hex bolts are closely related to, often confused with hex screws, but different in shape and how they are used. Normally, a hex screw has a washer face under the hexagonal head and a chamfered thread, but a hex bolt doesn't. Meanwhile, a hex bolt is typically used with nuts and washers to create a bolted joint. In contrast, a hex screw forms its own join in the component being fastened, without using a nut.
