Description
OXYTOCIN INJECTION (Synthetic) contains 20 USP Units of oxytocic activity per mL in a clear, sterile, colourless aqueous solution. It is a polypeptide of
8 amino acids chemically synthesized from optically active amino acids.
Preservative: 0.5% w/v chlorobutanol.
Oxytocin Injection Indications
As an aid in the treatment of the following conditions in cows, mares, sows, ewes, dogs and cats:
1. In dystocia due to uterine inertia.
2. In evacuating tissue and debris from the uterus in cases of pyometra or endometritis.
3. For preventing or controlling postpartum uterine hemorrhage.
4. Uncomplicated agalactia in sows.
5. To aid in the correction of a prolapsed uterus.
6. To aid in evacuation, debridement and drainage in mastitis.
7. Initiation of lactation following parturition.
8. To induce labor.
9. To accelerate the process of normal parturition.
10. Agalactia in heifers and cows with extreme oedema of the udder.
11. Post operative contraction of the uterus following caesarian section.
Oxytocin Injection Dosage And Administration
OXYTOCIN INJECTION may be injected subcutaneously, intramuscularly or intravenously. Use aseptic technique. The following dosages are
recommended and may be repeated as needed.
For obstetrical use:
Cows and mares 2.5 to 5 mL
Sows and ewes 1.5 to 2.5 mL
Dogs 0.25 to 1.5 mL
Cats 0.25 to 0.75 mL
To stimulate milk let-down:
Cows 0.5 to 1.0 mL
Sows 0.25 to 1.0 mL
For rapidity of action and maximum effectiveness in mastitis treatment, the intravenous route is recommended. Oxytocin is more effective when
administered intravenously as compared to other routes.
Cows 1.0 to 2.0 mL
Contraindications
Early stages of labour (where the cervix is not fully relaxed), mechanical obstruction (gross fetal deformities, malpresentation or factors
predisposing to uterine rupture), and in cases showing cardiac disease or renal disease.
Oxytocin Injection Cautions
Excessive dosage may cause spasm of coronary arteries and high blood pressure. Oxytocin is a potent preparation and therefore should be used
with caution. For prepartum use, full relaxation of the cervix should be accomplished either naturally or by administration of estrogens prior to
oxytocin therapy. Likewise, it may be desirable to resensitize the uterus to oxytocin by the administration of estrogens 8 to 24 hours prior to
oxytocin injection therapy, in the postpartum period.
Warnings
Milk taken from treated animals within 24 hours after latest treatment must not be used as food. When this drug is administered intramuscularly
to dairy cattle at a dose of up to 20 I.U. (1 mL), no milk withholding time is required.
Treated animals must not be slaughtered for use in food for at least 3 days after the latest treatment with this drug.
