Cross-linked polyethylene or PEX tubing and polyethylene of raised temperature resistance or PERT tubing are widely used in water supply systems due to their advantages over the more traditional metal piping such as lead, iron or copper piping. It can also be used in place of rigid plastic piping systems like ABS, CPVC and PVC. It has been used successfully in Europe for nearly forty years and has been in use in the United States around 1980.
