Packings have been known and used in their basic forms since the beginnings of the industrial age and the development of the steam engine.
Soft material was stuffed into a box - the stuffing box - in order to achieve a sealing effect. The material became known accordingly as stuffing box packing.
Much has changed of course since those days, but packings are still in use today.
