Loose shifter linkage is a common problem on the late 79 - 84 1/2  FX series shovel four speeds .  There are three areas that require attention if one desires to remove the excessive play.  Shifter lever bushing replacement (all models except wide glide)  Square ended shifter lever shaft and the shifter rod assembly

Normal replacement of the FX shovel shifter linkage lever arm bushing requires extensive disassembly of the primary drive and the inner primary cover to access and remove the mounting bolt.  The mounting bolt is to long and cannot be removed while the primary inner cover is installed.The removal and replacement of hardware to access the lever and worn bushing may require 4 to 6 hours.  Installation of the ice shifter lever bushing and pin mod kit requires the normal work effort however once installed the ice pivot anchor pinallows removal of the shifter lever by removing the snap ring to allow the shifter lever to be removed with the inner primary in place.  The bushing can now be replaced in a matter of minutes as opposed to the hours previously required.  Installation of the kit requires removal of the inner primary or it can be accomplished during transmission seal replacement or in conjunction with other repairs requiring access to the transmission left side.
