Thrust ball bearings with flat back face are separable and divided into single direction and double direction designs. The single direction thrust ball bearings with flat back face can only be used to carry axial load in one direction and limit the axial displacement in single direction. The double direction thrust ball bearings with flat back face can be used to carry axial loads in both directions and limit the axial displacements in both directions. Nether of them can carry radial loads.
Single direction thrust ball bearings consist of a row of balls (with cage), shaft ring (close fit with shaft) and housing ring (loose fit with shaft and close fit with housing). They can only carry axial load in one direction, and are not able to carry radial loads, because the axial loads are well-distributed on each ball, the load carrying capacity is higher, but their limiting speed is lower. The thrust ball bearings cannot limit the radial displacement of shafts or housings, but are capable of limiting axial displacement of shaft and housing in one direction. Therefore, this type of bearings is usually used together with deep groove ball bearings. While mounting, the centre line of shaft and housing must keep alignment, otherwise the stress concentration will cause bearing to fail in early period. In order to eliminate this influence, 0.5~1 mm radial clearance (between housing ring outer diameter and housing bore) must be kept.
Double direction thrust ball bearings consist of one shaft washer, two housing washers and two ball and cage thrust assemblies. The bearings are separable so that mounting is simple. The various parts can be mounted separately. The housing washers and ball and cage thrust assemblies are identical to those of the single direction bearing. Smaller bearings are available with either a flat seating surface on the housing washers or with a sphered seating surface . Bearings with sphered housing washers can be used together with sphered seating washers to compensate for misalignment between the housing and shaft. The sphered seating washers are available from Top Strong but must be ordered separately. Double direction thrust ball bearings can accommodate axial loads acting in both directions and can thus serve to axially locate a shaft in both directions. They must not be subjected to radial load.
