There are two styles of Couplings; Rigid and Flexible. Rigid do not allow any movement of the two connecting shafts, where as Flexible allow some degree of shifting. Rigid are used in applications where the shaft will absorb any minor flexing, and flexible allow some degree of movement although some power or work per unit of time might be lost.
