Harmonic Drive

Harmonic Drive is a mechanical device for transmission of motion and power, which is based upon a unique principle of controlled elastic deformations of some thin-walled elements.
The three basic components of a Harmonic Drive are: wave generator, flexspline and circular spline. Any one of the three components may be fixed, while one of the remaining two may be the driver, and the other the driven, to effect speed increase or speed decrease and at fixed speed ratio. Or, two of the three components may be the driver while the third the driven so as to effect differential transmission.

In the case of circular spline fixed, let the wave generator be the driver, and flexspline the driven, the flexspline will change its form under the action of an elliptically-cammed wave-generator. On the major axis, the spline’s teeth are in full engagement, while on the minor axis, they are fully out of engagement. In any two adjacent quarters with respect to the revolving axis, a number of teeth beside the major axis are in a state of either gradual engaging-in or gradual engaging-out. In the course of continuous rotation of the wave generator, the above-mentioned four processes repeat cyclically. Because the number of teeth on the flexspline is two less than those on the circular spline, one full revolution of the wave generator will cause the flexspline to counter-rotate through an angle corresponding to two teeth of the flxspline, and thus results in a large reduction ratio of the drive.
