Spiral wound metallic gaskets are manufactured by winding alternate layers of metal strip and filler material over each other in circular (Spiral) Way. The layers are wound on each other tightly on automatic machine to prevent leakage and to act as seal between flanges through which liquid or mediums is passing at high temperature and pressure. CAF or other type of Gaskets can withstand Temperature & Pressure only upto a certain level and therefore in case of high pressure & temperature application, in order to provide effective sealing, spirally wound metallic gaskets are used. Normally, the shapes of Spiral wound Gaskets is circular, however, in certain cases, in can also be made in non circular shape.

In addition to metal strips and filter material inner and outer centering rings made out of solid metal are provided to add extra strength to the gaskets, depending upon flanges.

Filler Material & metal Used

As mentioned above, the Spiral Gaskets are made out of alternate layers of metal strip and filler material. The metal Strip and the centering Ring may generally be of S.S. 304 or S.S. 316 and Low Carbon Steel. The filler materials may consist of Asbestos (mainly, Compressed Asbestos Fibre Sheets) Grafoil (Pure graphite strips) and in some cases, PTEF (PTFE), depending upon gasket application and temperature, pressure conditions.
