Equipped with AC-DC transmission,DF8D is a main line freight diesel locomotive. It can meet theneeds of heavy load at high speed on busy main line.
The diesel power drives athree-phase AC synchronous traction alternator to generatethree-phase alternating current. Through rectifier, the current isfed to the traction motor which then drives the wheel sets throughtraction gears.
The running gear of thelocomotive consists of two exchangeable three-axle bogies, where alow four-rod mechanism traction and side bearings of rubber padsare adopted. Journal box springs and side bearings form a two-stagesuspension. The traction motor is suspended from the axle of thewheel set. Type JZ-7 brake equipment is used for the brakingsystem, which makes it possible to brake the locomotiveindependently or together with the whole vehicles trailed. Electricresistance brake can also be applied on long downgradient.
