Introductions:
Proanthocyanidin (PA or PAC), also known as procyanidin, oligomericproanthocyanidin (OPC), leukocyanidin, leucoanthocyanin andcondensed tannins, is a class of flavanols. Proanthocyanidins areessentially polymer chains of flavonoids such as catechins. One wasdiscovered in 1936 by Professor Jacques Masquelier and calledVitamin P, although this name did not gain official category statusand has since fallen out of usage. It was Masquelier who firstdeveloped techniques for the extraction of proanthocyanidins fromcertain plant species.
Polyphenols are a group of chemical substances found in plants,characterized by the presence of more than one phenol unit orbuilding block per molecule. Polyphenols are generally divided intohydrolyzable tannins (gallic acid esters of glucose and othersugars) and phenylpropanoids, such as lignins, flavonoids, andcondensed tannins.
