These are the pellets from inside a shotgun shell. Lead shotand bullets have been banned in many areas because they poison theenvironment. The main substitute materials are steel, bismuth andtungsten. The main advantages of tungsten are that it''s verydense, and very hard. The density allows the pellets to fly longdistances without slowing down, while the hardness allows thepellets to keep their shape while being accelerated by the powdercharge, which increases the muzzle velocity. (When pellets of leadare deformed during acceleration, that deformation absorbs energywhich could have gone into acceleration, and furthermore lead onlyhas about half the density of tungsten.)
