Description:
Seals and Gaskets that Offer Flexibility, Strength,High-Temperature Resistance.Cryogenic system washers
Cold can often be more stressful on gasket materials thanextreme heat, since the molecular structure of many materials isaffected by cold conditions. Ordinary gasketing materials becomerigid, hard, and brittle—and may crack, crumble, or even shatter oncontact with liquefied air or gases.
In a typical application of a compressed knitted wire meshgasket in a production-line installation for quick-freezinghamburger, tadpole gaskets are used on the cover flanges to seal inthe freezing gas when the covers are closed. At the (-170°C)operating temperature, conventional gasket materials shatter, notonly destroying the seal and releasing gas, but contaminating thefood as well.
Similar compositions and configurations are available for use onall types of cryogenic instruments, machinery, vehicles, andequipment where liquid air, oxygen, nitrogen, and helium are commonmedia. Knitted wire gaskets provide an effective seal and remainresilient down to temperatures as low as -195°C
