Constant force springs are a special variety ofextension spring. They consist of a spiral of strip material withbuilt-in curvature so that each turn of the strip wraps tightly onits inner neighbor.When the strip is extended(deflected) theinherent stress resists the loading force, just as in a commonextension spring , but at a nearly constant (zero)rate.
The constant force spring is well suited to longextensions with no load build-up. In case , the spring is usuallymounted with the Inner Diameter tightly wrapped on a drum and thefree end attached to the loading force , such as in acounterbalance application. This relationship can be reserved ,however, with the free end mounted with carbon brushes inelectrical apparatus.
Considerable flexibility is possible with constantforce springs because the load capacity can be multiplied by usingtwo or more strips in tandem or back-to-back , asillustrated.
Be sure to allow at least 1-1/2 coils of materialon the drum at full extension. The spring Inner Diameter will wraptightly on the drum so that in most applications no fasteningmethod on the drum is required.
