An Intoduction To Shell Collecting
With 50, 000 differernt kinds of shells (ie, seashells and land and tree snails) , many with dozens or even hundreds of color and pattern combinations to find and enjoy, shell collecting offers a little something for anyone interested in the beauty, variety, or the remarkable richness of the Natural World in general. Although you will encounter a lot of Latin names, measurements in millimetres, and unfamailiar terms such as "columella" (the lower part of the inner lip of a shell) , and "operculum" (the "trap door" that the animal who built the shell used to keep out predators who want to eat them) , you most certainly don't have to be a scientist to marvel at the huge variety of shapes, patterns, colors and intricate details that the "Shell World" offers.
On this portion of the site, which we will hopefully be developing "soon" we will give an introduction
